This study examines policy issues related to multi-purpose and single use-trail cost based on an explicit process and empirical analysis of several case studies. Research continues to identify criteria for the design of appropriate bicycle facilities and pedestrian systems, but the selection of these modes of transportation depends on many factors, including vehicular and bicycle traffic characteristics, adjacent land use and expected growth patterns, terrain, path size and materials, and even the impact of tourism and physical health measures of a community. These factors affect the cost and design requirements of path facilities and thus need to be reflected in cost saving strategies that are then made available to policy makers.
